Understanding electricity costs in Alaska

For May 2026, EIA reported a U.S. residential average of 18.44¢ per kWh. The Alaska average of 28.23¢ per kWh was approximately 53.1% higher. This percentage compares average energy prices, not total bills: a lower rate can still produce a larger bill when a household uses more electricity.

Climate and household factors to test

Run at least three scenarios instead of relying on one statewide-average bill. Use a mild-weather month as a baseline, then test the highest summer and winter kWh values from the last twelve months. This separates the effect of price from changes in air conditioning, space heating, water heating, pool or pump operation, occupancy, and equipment runtime.

For a practical efficiency check, compare daily kWh rather than only monthly totals because billing periods can contain different numbers of days. If usage rises, review thermostat settings, filter condition, unusually long equipment runtime, electric resistance backup heat, and appliances that operate continuously before assuming the rate alone caused the increase.

What can move the bill?

  • Usage: Weather, home size, insulation, equipment efficiency, and household schedules can change monthly kWh.
  • Rate design: Tiered, seasonal, demand, and time-of-use plans may not behave like one flat rate.
  • Non-energy charges: Taxes, fuel adjustments, storm recovery, minimum bills, and local fees can change the final total.

How to use this estimate

Start with 900 kWh to compare the statewide benchmark. Then replace usage with the kWh from a recent bill and replace the rate with your effective energy price. To estimate an effective price, divide the energy-related variable charges by billed kWh; keep fixed customer charges in the separate field.

Repeat the calculation with several bills and record the result alongside the billing dates. A twelve-month view is more reliable than comparing a hot or cold month with a mild month. When a plan includes tiers or time-of-use pricing, calculate each tier or period separately or enter the blended variable price shown by the total energy charges divided by total kWh.
